Top 5 Things to Know Before You Apply for Summer Staff
overall summer schedule... the 11-12 weeks:
2 Weeks of Staff Training:
- All staff undergo two weeks of intensive staff training, covering a variety of topics, including ministry leadership, faith formation, child and youth development, facilitative leadership, program planning, and risk management.
- We will equip you with the skills you need for everything from leading Archery to helping campers navigate separation anxiety (some of them are away from home for the first time as well!), and canoeing to sharing your faith with campers.
- This time is also focused on personal formation and community development.
- Staff training is required for all staff and typically begins around Memorial Day.
2-3 Weeks of Off-Site Day Camp OR On-Site serving groups:
- Off-Site DayCamp: After Staff Training concludes most of the counselors will head out on the road for 2-3 weeks of Day Camp, which is similar to Vacation Bible School. Teams of 3-4 counselors will travel to a congregation in Southern Idaho or Northern Utah which will host the staff for the week as they implement the Day Camp program from 9am-3pm.
- On-Site User Groups: While most counselors travel for Day Camp, some counselors and camp assistants remain onsite to serve the guests that come, as well as assist with our Leaders in Training Week and our Intro to Ridges backpacking trip for campers.
7 Weeks of On-site Youth and Family Camp:
- The staff all return to camp the last week of June. We spend the weekend refreshing our community connections and prepare for the next 7 weeks of camp.
- These next 7 weeks are a more traditional summer camp rhythm. Here is a DAILY SCHEDULE of a typical Summer Camp week, though it is subject to change and we make annual tweaks to adapt to needs of the group each week.
- These weeks will also include 2 weeks of Family Camp.
Work and Time OFf:
You will work hard in a ministry setting if selected to be a part of the Camp Perkins staff team. Counselors spend a majority of the day with their campers, while Summer Program Facilitators and Camp Assistants often work behind the scenes to keep camp running smoothly and fulfill the required duites of each day.
All staff will receive on average of a day and half off per week. Staff can expect to work 5-6 weekends throughout the summer and have the rest of their weekends off. In addition, all staff receive one hour off each day. A summer in the Sawtooth Mountains and near Sun Valley, ID, offers opportunities to hike, mountain bike and explore the outdoors, as well as relax on a trip to town and experience local coffee roasters, art and Sun Valley adventures.
Any time off requests are entirely dependent on the needs of the summer program. Please be aware that our hiring preference will go to staff who can work the entire summer. With that said, we work hard to be flexible with staff time off requests - if you need an early end date or extended block of time off during the summer, we encourage you to still apply so we can discuss your options!
All that being said, this is the hardest job you’ll ever love. You’ll get paid to do things like paddle-board across the lake, climb the tower, dance around the campfire, roast s’mores, and talk to kids about Jesus. You’ll wake up every morning knowing you get a chance to make a difference and experience the rhythms of a life centered around faith and fun. You’ll become a part of the rich and deep legacy at Camp Perkins and gain a camp family that will last for the rest of your life. A summer at camp can change your life in a way that not many jobs can.

Where You will live while at camp:
- Counselors and Camp Assistants are housed with the summer campers in our one-room bunk-style cabins from Sunday afternoon-Friday afternoon.
- Showerhouses are a short walk from the cabins. On weekends, staff get to bunk together in 2-3 of the cabins as the rest are used by our weekend family events.
- Camp Perkins will provide you with a footlocker which slides under your bed for convenience. Take a tour through the camp facilities here.
salary:
We recognize that finances can be a stress point and an obstacle that prevents people from following the call of Jesus to serve at camp. If you’re looking for one of the most impactful, formational experiences in ministry and leadership that you will ever have the opportunity to be a part of—this is it.
- Salaries start at ~$320/week for counselors and program staff and ~$270/week for Camp Assistant positions.
- Salary increases are given for past experience at Camp Perkins or NLOMA partner camps.
- Additionally, we offer some mileage reimbursement for travel to Idaho which is paid on your final paycheck.
- Paychecks are dispensed on June 15th, July 15th and the last day of your Summer Service Agreement.
Getting to Idaho... it's an adventure!
Planes, Trains and Automobiles! We acknowledge that for some of you, Camp Perkins is a great distance from home.
- We will work with you to find the best method to travel.
- Frequently staff ride share from the mid-West... and what an adventure!
- If flying, the closest airport is in Hailey, ID (SUN). Less expensive options for flying are in Boise (BOI) or Salt Lake (SLC), however they are still 4-6 hours from camp. We can often find a ride to camp for you if you communicate in advance with us to coordinate.
